December  2019
Presidents Message...

December for some gardeners is filled with poinsettias, amaryllis and paper whites. I don’t know how paperwhites and amaryllis became associated with this season. Everyone sells them these days, including Walmart. About 15 years ago I gave my mother an amaryllis for Christmas. After she moved twice, she called me to say she was finally able to bring that bulb back. She was so excited! (I would have composted the bulb.) It did not bloom, it just got a few green leaves, but it brought her so much joy and hope, everything that the holidays are about.

LI Hort is a great organization, and a great organization cannot be run without its volunteers. I am looking for a couple of volunteers to help keep us running. We need a person to help us in sending out our emails. It is something that would take up maybe 30 minutes of your time maybe twice a month.

The other position is one that would help us balance our checkbook. I, for one, do not even balance my own personal checkbook so this is not a position for me. But I know we have members who are good with numbers, so please consider giving us some of your time. We cannot run without volunteers. I am begging.

At the last meeting, I missed announcing Connie Knies’ as board member. She is our corresponding secretary, and she does a fine job. Sorry, Connie, the omission was not intentional.

Don’t miss the holiday party, it promises to be full of merriment. And whatever holiday you celebrate, I wish you peace and joy over the season and coming year.
