President's Message....

It is hot, it is hazy and it is humid- it is all the things summer on Long Island is supposed to be! And I love it! I am in my garden every day watering, weeding, and relaxing as I hope you are.

My husband wanted to have a lot of sunflowers in our garden this year – he wanted me to plant them in the existing perennial beds. I did not think this was the best idea so when he was not looking, my son dug me a 3 foot bed on our front lawn. I planted it with about dozen sunflowers, zinnias, and borage (yes, it is a little crowded) and it is doing fine. Once he got over his initial objections, he has grown to like it. Once it starts blooming, it will be like an exclamation point on the front lawn.

Make sure you sign up for our summer picnic in Centerport. It is a chance to socialize with your LI Hort friends outside of Planting Fields. See the website and check your emails for more details.

July 26 we are heading to gardens of Landcraft Environmental. I will be sending an email out shortly with the address. It is located in Mattituck and we will be meeting there at 10am. There is a $10 fee payable at the door. Dennis and Bill’s garden is beautiful, make sure you do not miss this one.

Would you like to work with a diverse group of dynamic gardeners to shape the future of the club? We are looking for someone to take over the position of treasurer on the LI Hort board. Please consider joining the board. The position is not difficult and it comes with training, if you can balance a checkbook, you have the qualifications!

Have a great summer and see you in September!
